Housing Options Workshop – Liz's NDIS story

Video transcript

Liz

I'm Liz. I moved into my new apartment a month ago. It's really exciting because it's the first time I've lived anywhere on my own, and it's very, very cool. I was in shared supported accommodation for six years with people that were aged in their 50s and 60s. And it just wasn't the right model or the right set up for me. Over the years I've yearned for something different and I've hoped that it would come. With the apartment, it's all back in my control.

Coming here is the best balance between needing help, but being independent that I could possibly get. It's home, instead of someone's workplace. I love living in this area because I love the landscape. It's got everything at your fingertips when you walk out of the apartment and it's got so many cafes that it's really amazing. I feel relieved to have a place of my own. There's a massive sense of accomplishment. It feels to me like I've broken a glass ceiling. To know now that we've got a system with the NDIS and in conjunction with other organisations to make things like this happen, it's so special.
